Outreach Post at the Border

.
Volunteers from our SDFLC drove to the south of San Diego at a section of the border wall at the end of Monument Road. They brought with them blankets, cans of food, fruits, vegetables, clothes, bed sheets, comforters, pillows & pillowcases, jackets, socks, scarves, bunnies, cup noodles, ramen, instant coffee and Swiss chocolate, regular door to door box hooded sweats for men's and ladies. socks gloves for children and many more goods and various items. Very grateful to Lion Shirley, PP Lion Bert, Lion Lou, Lion Judge Clare, Lion Luz, Lion Eden and Boyet, Lion Eden’s sisters Noemi and Leslie, Lion Nena and Rolando, Lion Gemma and Chris, and Lion Melba.
We shared the food we were preparing with the permanent volunteers at the outreach post. I meant we were eating the sandwiches we were preparing. We just got hungry working hard. We had fun helping the volunteers. I met Cliff, Joseph, Adriana, Myriam, and the other volunteers.
We were planning to wait for the migrants to arrive. The news came that around a hundred migrants were coming. Only children and parents are to be brought to the site by the border patrol. But when the weather started to get worse, our group decided to leave. We left with worry and anticipation for the volunteers and migrants. The organizers brought in a horse trailer to give shelter for the volunteers when the rain comes. And where are the children and mothers to find shelter when the rain starts pouring? What I forgot to describe to you is that to help the migrants, they have to extend their arms across the tall iron fences to receive the meager food and medical supplies they need. The irony of the situation is that no matter how much one desires to help and be closer to those that need the help there is a big wall separating them.
The donations of food and supplies are not enough for the large volume of migrants that arrive at the post. The volunteers at the site would like to receive the following food donations: 16 oz water bottles, gallon sized water, cups of noodles, sandwich bread, instant coffee, creamer, sugar, hot cocoa, tea, peanut butter, jelly, mayonnaise, sliced lunch meat (Turkey only), sliced cheese, eggs, apples, oranges, bananas, granola bars, fruit bars, applesauce, nuts infant formula in oz. bottles.
My short visit at the outreach post this afternoon opened my eyes to the struggle and suffering of the migrants. I am hoping that this report and message will shed some light on the flight of the migrants. I am very grateful to Lion Shirley and Past President Bert for introducing this worthwhile project to our Club.
May the joy of Christmas and Holiday be with you fellow Lions!
